During Mark Stott’s ownership, the Hatters consistently made excellent decisions on which players to pursue. Signing Paddy Madden in 2021 proved to be one of the best decisions the club has ever made, as the Irish forward has consistently finished at the top of the goal scoring charts throughout his time with the club.
The decision to sign Fraser Horsfall from Northampton Town, who eventually replaced club legend Ash Palmer, was a necessary step towards winning the League Two title. The point is that Stockport has had far more successes than failures in the transfer market in recent seasons.
If they are to compete in League One again, this trend is likely to continue.
With that in mind, here are five players that Stockport County should target next.
1 Jayden Fevrier.
Jayden Fevrier, a Colchester United winger, performed well as a substitute in a 1-2 loss to Stockport last month. He is physical but quick, with agility that is easily League One caliber.
In 44 United appearances, he has four goals, four assists, and four yellow cards.
The 21-year-old has demonstrated his potential this season, but it should not be too costly for Stockport to sign him away from Colchester in the summer.
2Shadrach Ogie
At 22 years old, centre-back Shadrach Ogie would make an excellent long-term partner for Fraser Horsfall. This season, he has been one of the best defenders in League Two for Gillingham, and he may be interested in moving up.
Challinor has struggled to find a consistent defensive pairing during his time at Edgeley Park, with Joe Lewis and Phil Bardsley leaving due to a lack of support from the manager.
Shadrach could replace Neill Byrne at Edgeley Park, as the Irish defender approaches his 30s.
3. Louie Watson
Luton Town midfielder Louie Watson could be a fantastic signing for The Hatters. The 22-year-old had an up-and-down loan spell with Charlton Athletic last season, and his parent club may believe that another stint in League One is necessary.
Stockport have always had a group of technically gifted midfielders under Challinor, who play to support his preferred wing-backs’ wide runs. Watson can provide this and supplement the other options in the engine room.

A permanent deal feels unlikely given he only made the move to Kenilworth Road last summer but a loan deal would make sense for all parties.
4Matt Smith
Matt Smith, a recent free agent, is looking for a new challenge.
With 24 goals in League Two this season, tying Wrexham hero Paul Mullin, the veteran has helped Salford City stay afloat despite their struggles.
It’s not a long-term solution, but the 34-year-old could be a valuable addition on a free transfer.
5.Macauley Langstaff
Notts County’s Macauley Langstaff is an obvious choice for Stockport’s marquee summer signing.
Despite his team’s disappointing season in League Two, finishing mid-table in what was supposed to be a promotion campaign, the striker managed an incredible 28 goals and 4 assists in 46 games. More impressively, Langstaff earned the fourth-tier golden boot for 2023/24.
Notts County is unlikely to sell him for a low price, with a fee of at least £1 million expected. Stockport may also face competition.
If you’re an EFL fan, you’ll understand how good the Englishman is. He is quick, focused, and one of the best ball strikers outside of the Championship. Enough said.
