Russell Martin heaps praise on Southampton’s ‘brilliant’ Player contributions

SAINTS manager Russell Martin claimed that nothing phases Alex McCarthy following the goalkeeper’s “massive” performance at West Brom.

The 34-year-old made two excellent saves to deny Grady Diangana what would have been the winning goal at the Hawthorns.

McCarthy’s performance earned Southampton a 0-0 draw in the second leg of their playoff semi-final against the Baggies.

The former England keeper played a supporting role under Martin until first-choice shot-stopper Gavin Bazunu’s season was cut short by injury.

When asked for his opinion on McCarthy’s performances since his return to the starting lineup, Martin said: “He’s

great.

“He was massive today; (he is) great with long throws and the way he approached and dealt with situations. I’ve really enjoyed how we’ve defended over the last two weeks.

“I don’t think anything bothers him. He has a laid-back attitude, but he is very confident in his abilities as a goalkeeper.

“He has been fantastic.”

Southampton fans voted the two-time England international player of the match for his heroics in goal.

Flynn Downes, McCarthy’s teammate, described him as a “joke” before adding, “It’s a privilege to play with him.”

On Sunday, a number of Saints fans took to social media to present the veteran goalkeeper with flowers.

Glen de la Cour wrote: “It’s nice to see the 2017 Alex McCarthy show up today. Excellent performance.

Martin Bellis added, “Got to say that he was superb once again. Excellent professional performance today. He ensured we didn’t lose; job done! “C’mon, Saints.”

@SaintsDanSFC stated: “We’ve all doubted Alex McCarthy, including myself. However, he stood up when it really counted.”

Mitchell Symonds stated, “Alex McCarthy was mustard today, that may have been the best game I’ve seen him have for us.”
