Jason Demetriou’s fate could be determined by Tuesday’s conclusion when the South Sydney Rabbitohs convene for a board meeting. Unsurprisingly, Demetriou’s future is the primary topic for discussion, given his team’s meager performance of just one win in their first seven matches this season.
South Sydney has faced challenges with injuries and suspensions, compounded by a significant downturn in form toward the end of 2023. This collapse, which saw them plummet from top of the table at Round 11 to missing the finals, has positioned Demetriou as a coach on shaky ground.
Following a heavy defeat at the hands of the Melbourne Storm on ANZAC Day, where his team conceded more than 50 points, Demetriou openly admitted uncertainty about what lies ahead for him.
The upcoming fixture against the three-time defending premiers, the Penrith Panthers, adds to the pressure, especially given South Sydney’s current standing with the worst defensive record in the competition.
Phil Rothfield from News Corp indicated that Demetriou’s future will be a focal point of Tuesday’s board meeting, suggesting a decision may be imminent. Reports earlier suggested Demetriou faced possible dismissal after a Round 6 match against the Cronulla Sharks, but an improved performance tempered immediate action from the board, albeit without committing to a long-term plan.
With South Sydney’s recent loss to the Storm and the upcoming challenging matches, including one against the Panthers followed by a game against the St George Illawarra Dragons, Demetriou’s tenure hangs in the balance. Should he be removed, assistant coach Ben Hornby is a favored candidate to step in as interim coach, possibly marking his debut against his former club.
