BREAKING NEWS: Meninga has concerns about taking up the interim role at Souths.

Mal Meninga has expressed reservations about taking on the South Sydney coaching job, citing concerns about how the situation with Jason Demetriou has been handled. As pressure mounts on Demetriou, Meninga has openly stated his interest in the Rabbitohs’ role on an interim basis, should it become available. He is set to depart for a family holiday in Vanuatu this week and intends to consider his options while abroad.

While Meninga and the Rabbitohs deny any official approach, it’s evident that there has been discussion from a third party regarding his potential involvement. However, in the lead-up to South Sydney’s recent loss to Cronulla, Meninga started voicing doubts. He raised questions about the perceived lack of support for Demetriou and the uncertainty surrounding his future, particularly after Demetriou’s brief 27-second press conference.

Meninga expressed discomfort about his name being linked without formal contact and sympathized with Demetriou’s situation. He emphasized that if he were to step in as the interim coach, his priority would be winning a premiership for Souths. However, he clarified that this move wouldn’t jeopardize his role as Kangaroos coach, and he would only take on the Souths position if the ARL Commission permitted him to balance both responsibilities.

He stressed that his decision would be driven by a genuine desire to contribute positively and achieve success, rather than financial or ego-driven motives. Meninga’s deliberations come as Benji Marshall, a former player under Demetriou’s coaching, expressed support for Demetriou amid the ongoing speculation.
