‘I wouldn’t even…’: Neil Warnock’s prediction for Sheffield Wednesday this season is scarily accurate

This weekend marks Sheffield Wednesday’s final game of the 2023/24 Championship season against Sunderland. As has been the trend for their last 10 or even 20 fixtures, this match stands out as the most crucial of the season and a defining moment in Danny Rohl’s tenure as manager.

Rohl, against all expectations, has positioned his team with a significant chance of survival, displacing Huddersfield Town, who now face the likelihood of relegation, and Birmingham City, currently in 22nd place.

Nevertheless, Sheffield Wednesday still face the threat of relegation to League One. Their task is straightforward: secure at least a point against Sunderland, a team struggling with form, having won just two of their last 14 matches in the Championship. Alternatively, Birmingham City must defeat 5th-placed Norwich City at home to give Sheffield Wednesday a lifeline.

Before the 3-0 win over West Brom last time out, Baggies boss Carlos Corberan spoke fondly of Sheffield Wednesday.

He even entered his pre-match press conference with a graph showing the form table from the last 25 games, and the form table since Rohl took charge at Hillsborough.

From the last 25 games now, Sheffield Wednesday are 10th in the table and only three behind West Brom.

From the last 20 games, Wednesday are in 8th, from the last 15 they’re in 4th, and from the last five games they’re in 2nd, behind only Millwall.

The Owls have lost just one of their last seven now, winning three, and going into the Sunderland game on back-to-back wins.

Neil Warnock prediction about Sheffield Wednesday comes true

Sheffield Wednesday have managed to stay afloat, and while there’s still work to be done, they appear to have a significant chance of remaining in the division. About a month ago, Neil Warnock, a seasoned figure in football, shared his thoughts on Wednesday’s survival prospects. Not surprisingly, he foresaw a tight relegation battle until the last day and suggested that Sheffield Wednesday might win consecutive matches. He mentioned that even if they have a bad game, they could bounce back with two wins, indicating that they shouldn’t be underestimated.

Looking ahead, Sheffield Wednesday’s position in the Championship could improve. Despite the ongoing risk of relegation until the final day, they’ve made notable progress from being at the bottom of the table to 23rd place. If they win their last game and both QPR and Stoke City lose, while Blackburn Rovers don’t win, they could finish as high as 17th, depending on goal difference. This potential outcome marks a significant turnaround from what initially seemed like a dismal season in the Championship, offering some comfort above the relegation zone.

All eyes will be on their upcoming match against Sunderland as they aim to secure at least a draw and avoid defeat.
