One Sheffield Wednesday player has now been tipped to leave the club as a free agent in the summer.
Multiple individuals appear poised to depart Sheffield Wednesday as their contracts conclude this summer. For Danny Rohl or whoever leads the team next, there will be players who could prove more valuable for the upcoming season than others.
Rohl has expressed a desire to retain Barry Bannan, Josh Windass, and Di’Shon Bernard at the club. However, recent remarks from Bannan regarding his future suggest that the Scottish midfielder may depart after nine years at Hillsborough.
Sheffield Wednesday facing goalkeeper crisis
Sheffield Wednesday, among other positions, look set to be very light on goalkeepers going into the summer.
Brighton loan man James Beadle will return to the south coast following his loan spell in S6, whilst Cameron Dawson is out of contract.
That leaves youngster Pierce Charles as the only first-team goalkeeper; Dom Howson recent revealed that contract talks with Charles have stalled.
Cameron Dawson Sheffield Wednesday future
Dawson, 28, graduated through the Wednesday youth academy, making his first-team debut in the 2016/17 season.
He’s since made 129 total appearances for the Owls having been the no.2 at times, including right now with Beadle currently keeping Dawson out of the XI.
Dawson has made 18 Championship appearances this season and has four clean sheets to his name.
But Dawson became a source of criticism in the build up to January, prompting Wednesday to bring in Beadle.
And ahead of his contract expiry in the summer, Howson has now tipped Dawson to leave, with fellow journalist Alan Biggs also believing that Dawson leaves in the summer.
Cameron Dawson’s viewpoint must be clear right now
Like Howson says, Dawson has shown in spells with Wednesday and then during a loan spell with Exeter City in the 2021/22 campaign, that he is a goalkeeper who can provide in the Football League.
This season has maybe shown us that Dawson is best in League One, however.
He’s not been all that reassuring this season and the young Beadle has come in and been a huge improvement, despite having never played in the Championship before.
So for Dawson, after several years in S6 and still being fairly young for a goalkeeper at 28, maybe the time is right for him to move on and take up a new challenge.
There’d surely be League One or maybe League Two teams queuing up to sign Dawson in the summer but for the Owls, at least one new goalkeeper will be needed.
It might be too much to ask Charles to step up next season but he could certainly challenge for no.2, with recent contract decisions in the youth sides suggesting that Sheffield Wednesday are turning their attentions to the next generation of Wednesday players.
