Bambo Diaby appears likely to participate in Sheffield Wednesday’s last home match of the season despite suffering a broken nose, thanks to positive updates on the fitness of their center-backs.
Diaby sustained the injury during the second half of Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers, a crucial win that propelled the Owls out of the relegation zone for the first time in the Championship season.
The outcome of Saturday’s match between Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City will determine if the losing team can catch up to Wednesday, but securing a result against West Bromwich Albion at home will make their final-day encounter with Sunderland more manageable.
Diaby trained with a protective mask on Thursday, alongside the recently recovered Di’Shon Bernard, while Michael Ihiekwe, whom Diaby substituted for at Ewood Park, trained on Wednesday.
“Bambo trained with us today, wearing a mask,” Rohl revealed on Thursday. “Icky (Ihiekwe) trained partially yesterday and rested today. Dish participated in full training this week, which is very promising.”
“I am pleased. We will assess the squad for Saturday.”
When asked if this indicated Diaby’s availability for Saturday’s match against West Brom, Rohl expressed optimism: “I hope so. He trained intensely yesterday without any issues and completed full training today. If he continues to train well tomorrow, I don’t foresee any problems.”
In terms of off-field matters, Wednesday will receive additional support, with their safety advisory group releasing an additional 1,250 tickets for the lower tier of the West Stand after both clubs sold out their seats.
Furthermore, Rohl has hinted at the necessary off-field changes to secure his tenure beyond his debut season in management, which has significantly bolstered his reputation.
“I see a lot of potential, particularly with our dedicated fan base,” he stated. “We had 7,000 fans at Blackburn, generating tremendous energy for us. However, as I’ve mentioned previously, we need to make some strategic moves in the summer.”
“It’s not just about harnessing the power of our supporters; we need to bolster other aspects and pursue a different direction. This involves improvements in the squad, facilities, and overall environment. Taking these steps in the summer would be highly beneficial.”
