Sheffield Wednesday will be free to sign ‘magic’ man if Birmingham City are relegated – opinion

Sheffield Wednesday supporters will never tyre of hearing Rohl’s name.

Even if Wednesday are relegated on the final day, which would be somewhat of a miracle on Birmingham City’s part, the Owls will have made an extraordinary comeback.

Going winless after 13 games this season and then scoring 50 points is quite an accomplishment.

If the Owls stay up, it may be the start of something great in S6. Owner Dejphon Chansiri will provide for Rohl and urge him to stay for the long-term.

If Sheffield Wednesday stay in the Championship and Birmingham City are relegated, Ian Poveda’s future may become obvious.

Poveda remains sidelined and may have played his final game for Sheffield Wednesday.

If that’s the case, he’ll be remembered as one of the best loan players the club has ever had, with his energetic performances and overall attacking impact playing a significant role in the turnaround in the second half of the season.

The 24-year-old is due to become a free agent after his contract with Leeds United expires in the summer. He now makes £6.1k per week at Elland Road.

Earlier this year, both Wednesday and Birmingham City were connected with a free summer bid for the Colombian international. However, if Birmingham City is relegated, they are likely out of the race to get Poveda.

Poveda has been dubbed a’magic’ player for Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls must take this approach on Ian Poveda this summer.

Despite his ailments, Poveda is someone Rohl and his teammates should do everything possible to bring back this summer.

Even if it’s only for one year, bringing Poveda back to the club on a permanent basis is a signing that would not only benefit the team but would also be well received by the supporters.

After a tumultuous season, the Wednesday hierarchy must do everything possible to keep the fans on board, and bringing Poveda back would undoubtedly help with that.

If he can use the summer to get fit and Rohl can use him sparingly next season (if he returns), Poveda might have a mostly-full season in the Championship after some difficult years at Leeds United.

Sunderland vs. Sheffield Wednesday begins at 12:30pm on Saturday and might see Poveda return to action.
