Sheffield Wednesday midfielder has ‘interest in England and overseas’ with summer exit confirmed

Sheffield Wednesday is beginning to finalize decisions regarding their players whose contracts are expiring, with another player expected to follow Lee Gregory in departing S6 this summer. Gregory recently shared his farewell message with Sheffield Wednesday fans after spending three years with the club and scoring 29 league goals.

Despite helping the Owls secure promotion from League One, the 35-year-old hasn’t been favored by Danny Rohl since Rohl’s arrival at Hillsborough in October. There’s uncertainty surrounding other players whose contracts are ending, leading to speculation about who will stay and who will leave.

Reports suggest that Barry Bannan and Josh Windass are likely to receive new contracts this summer. However, Windass hinted that many players are waiting to see what happens with Rohl’s situation. Rohl is currently in contract talks with Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri, and if he commits to a long-term stay at the club, it could influence many players’ decisions as well.

Journalist Joe Crann has confirmed another player’s exit from Sheffield Wednesday this summer. George Byers, a well-liked midfielder, will be leaving the club as a free agent. Byers had a successful spell with the club, contributing six goals and three assists in the promotion-winning 2022/23 season and earning praise for his performances under Rohl.

Despite Byers’ contributions, Sheffield Wednesday’s decision to release him seems abrupt. He has proven to be a valuable Championship-level player and leaving him out might require the team to find replacements in midfield. However, it appears that Byers didn’t fit Rohl’s playing style, leading to his departure. This decision opens up opportunities for new signings that better suit Rohl’s tactics and provides Byers a chance to continue his career elsewhere, given his abilities and relatively young age of 27.
