Sheffield Wednesday man to hold talks with Rotherham United over transfer amid serious interest

Rotherham United is seriously interested in a second Sheffield Wednesday promotion hero, with talks scheduled this week regarding a free transfer, according to The Star.

Earlier this month, The Star reported that the recently relegated Millers were among several clubs interested in midfielder George Byers, one of six senior players set to leave Sheffield Wednesday as per last week’s retained list.

Now, it has been revealed that Rotherham is aiming to persuade defender Reece James to join Steve Evans’ squad rebuild at the New York Stadium. James, whose departure from Sheffield Wednesday was also confirmed, is a target for the League One side, who are looking to bounce back to the second tier. Rotherham has already been active in the transfer market, securing notable signings such as Jonson Clarke-Harris, Joe Rafferty, and Shaun McWilliams.

Competition for James is expected, with talks reportedly taking place this week. The 30-year-old defender is also attracting interest from other League One and League Two clubs, similar to the interest he garnered in January. A move to Rotherham would be a return to the club where he made seven league appearances on loan during the 2014/15 season while he was with Manchester United. Steve Evans was the manager during James’ initial stint at Rotherham.

James played a crucial role in Sheffield Wednesday’s dramatic promotion from League One, making 45 appearances and providing four assists. He scored one memorable goal for the club, the third in the ‘Hillsborough Miracle’ play-off semi-final win against Peterborough United.

Both James and Byers will officially leave Sheffield Wednesday when their contracts expire next month. Other players seeking new clubs include Tyreek Bakinson, Ciaran Brennan, and Juan Delgado, while Lee Gregory’s transfer to Mansfield Town has already been confirmed.
