Breaking news: Sheffield Wednesday aims to complete the signing of a striker with seven goals to their name if his current club faces relegation.

Sheffield Wednesday may find themselves in an unexpected position to sign a highly regarded striker in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Currently, Sheffield Wednesday is still vying for success in the Championship this season. However, for the first time in this campaign, luck seems to be favoring them.

Birmingham City’s survival hopes hinge on defeating Norwich City. If Birmingham City manages this and Sheffield Wednesday loses to Sunderland, the Owls could face relegation based on goal difference alone. However, if Sheffield Wednesday secures at least a draw against Sunderland, they will stay in the Championship regardless of Birmingham City’s result.

As attention begins to shift towards the summer, discussions are starting about potential developments for Sheffield Wednesday under manager Danny Rohl. Owner Dejphon Chansiri is likely considering what changes and acquisitions can be made during what promises to be a significant summer transfer window.

In this context, Sheffield Wednesday may have an opportunity to pursue the signing of Ike Ugbo in the near future.

Ike Ugbo parent club Troyes facing relegation from Ligue 2

Ugbo has spent the current season on loan from French club Troyes, initially with Cardiff City where he scored four goals in 20 Championship matches during the first half of the campaign. Subsequently, he moved to Sheffield Wednesday in January and netted seven goals in 17 appearances.

Ugbo’s performances at Hillsborough have been noteworthy; even when not scoring, he demonstrates a strong work ethic and contributes wholeheartedly to the team.

Recently, Rohl was questioned by The Star about the possibility of signing Ugbo permanently in the summer. However, Rohl redirected the discussion, stating that his focus is currently on the upcoming match against Sunderland.

Meanwhile, in France, Troyes is facing their own relegation battle. They are currently positioned in the bottom three, having won just one of their last 10 matches. Presently, they sit in 17th place in Ligue 2, which is the first of the three relegation spots, with only three games remaining in the season.

Troyes will play against Annecy in their final league fixture of the season on May 17th.

The major obstacle in possible Ike Ugbo transfer

Ugbo has certainly given Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday reason to bring him back this summer.

And with Troyes now facing relegation from the French second tier, it seems highly likely that Ugbo would want to move on to bigger and better after his impressive season in the Championship.

But with Ugbo under contract at Troyes until 2026, the French outfit are under no real pressure to sell this summer, and so he won’t be cheap at all.

The only pressure may be cashing in on Ugbo whilst his stock is high, which it certainly will be; especially so if Troyes are relegated as the vultures will no doubt swoop in and try and poach him.

Expect other teams to want to take a punt on Ugbo, with other Championship clubs bound to be looking at him ahead of the summer following his impressive streak for Wednesday.

Ugbo won’t command a huge transfer fee if Troyes are relegated and with Sheffield Wednesday set to streamline their wage bill this summer, there could be room in the budget for a move for Ugbo.

The Owls will have to hope that first; Troyes are relegated, and second; that they have the first say on the 25-year-old’s future.
