The 30-year-old forward concluded the season in fine style, scoring three key goals in their final three games, including the club’s goal of the season in a crucial victory over Blackburn Rovers. A comeback from injury at the beginning of April fueled a six-game unbeaten streak that kept them alive on the last day.

Windass has spent four and a half seasons at S6 and has been the subject of speculation about his future in recent months, with MLS club Real Salt Lake reportedly launching a bid to sign him on a permanent basis in the January transfer window, amid additional interest from EFL clubs including Southampton. According to sources, conversations are still underway and the former Rangers player has yet to make a choice.

His current contract with Wednesday expires in the coming weeks, as will the contracts of several prominent players at the club. Owls manager Danny Röhl is said to be a major fan of Windass’ abilities, and the club is now said to be eager to keep him next season as they attempt to push themselves further up the Championship standings. Captain Barry Bannan is one player who is anticipated to sign a new contract.

“The situation is that at the moment his contract is over after the season,” Röhl told The Star last week. “He played better and better after his lengthy injury. I’ll chat with Josh as well. We’ll see where we go on Sunday before making our final decision.”

Wednesday are expected to speak with their out-of-contract players in the coming days as they seek to move forward with their summer plans. Röhl, the Owls’ manager, has emphasised the significance of getting an active start to the summer break in order to prepare for the pre-season.

Windass, a Wembley hero, joined the Owls on a permanent basis in September 2020 after a successful loan spell with Wigan Athletic. He has 40 goals and 17 assists in 135 games.
