Sheffield Wednesday boss make relegation admission

Sheffield Wednesday’s manager, Danny Rohl, is concerned that accumulating 50 points might not suffice to evade relegation from the Championship as they approach the final three games of the season.

The team currently sits 23rd in the standings after a 1-1 draw against Stoke City over the weekend. This result was viewed as a missed opportunity for Sheffield Wednesday, especially since they were just three points behind Stoke City before the match began. Despite taking the lead in the second half through Liam Palmer, Stoke City equalized with Luke Cundle’s goal, leading to a shared point outcome.

This outcome did not favor Wednesday, especially considering that their relegation rivals, Huddersfield Town, managed to secure a draw, and Birmingham City secured a crucial win against Coventry City. Currently tied with Huddersfield Town at 44 points, Birmingham’s victory lifted them out of the relegation zone to 45 points. The relegation picture remains uncertain, with several teams still aiming to reach the 50-point safety mark.

While the 50-point threshold is often seen as the safety mark, Rohl believes this season could be an exception. He emphasized the need for mental strength and a push for nine points in the remaining games to reach 53 points and secure their fate. However, achieving three consecutive wins will be challenging. Despite losing just one of their last five games, Wednesday’s three draws have cost them valuable points, according to Rohl.

Their upcoming match against Blackburn Rovers presents an opportunity to make up ground, although Rohl acknowledges that fairness in scheduling is beyond his control. The team’s final two fixtures against West Bromwich Albion and Sunderland will also be crucial in their bid to avoid relegation. Rohl expressed the challenges of gaining managerial experience in such a demanding situation but remains focused on the task ahead.
