Former Sheffield Wednesday star, aged 38, advised to come back to Hillsborough in the upcoming summer.

A former Sheffield Wednesday veteran has been urged to return to Hillsborough this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday are just a couple of weeks away from finding out whether they will be playing Championship football next season.

The conclusion to the campaign is likely to be followed by intense contract negotiations, as the Owls look to extend the stays of many of their key players.

The likes of Barry Bannan, Josh Windass and Di’Shon Bernard will see their contracts expire at the end of the season, with Danny Rohl eager to wait until their Championship status is confirmed before they open fresh talks.

One man who has already confirmed he will be leaving Sheffield Wednesday regardless of the outcome is Nicky Weaver.

The Sheffield-born coach is set to step down as Head of Academy Goalkeeping after spending a total of 29 years with the club.

David Stockdale to Sheffield Wednesday (again)?

The Owls have been informed that replacing him will be challenging due to his significant impact on the team. However, journalist Joe Crann has suggested a potential replacement in the form of a former Wednesday goalkeeper.

David Stockdale, who joined Wednesday on a free transfer in 2022 and played a crucial role in their promotion to the Championship with 24 appearances, is being considered. After leaving Wednesday, he took up roles as both Head of Recruitment and player at York City but has now departed from that position abruptly.

On X, Stockdale hinted at his availability by writing, “Well….Anyone need a GK….” Crann quickly responded, noting that Nicky Weaver is leaving at the end of the season, hinting at a potential role for Stockdale.

Considering Stockdale’s transition away from playing at York City and his familiarity with many of the Wednesday players, his return to the club could be mutually beneficial. He could potentially join Danny Rohl’s coaching staff and also provide valuable experience as a player-coach.

However, for this to work, Wednesday would need to have goalkeepers for Stockdale to coach, as James Beadle and Cameron Dawson are likely to depart at the end of the season. While Stockdale could fulfill a dual role, Wednesday will likely prioritize recruiting new goalkeepers during the upcoming transfer window.
