Breaking News: Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday receive near eight-figure cash boost from EFL and Sky Sports

Sheffield Wednesday and other clubs in the Championship are poised to receive a significant financial boost this season, thanks to the EFL providing a seven-figure sum alongside substantial funds from Sky Sports. While the EFL’s payouts may not match those of the Premier League, clubs still reap considerable benefits from competing in the UK’s second-tier league. Each Championship club is entitled to “Solidarity Payments” and “Basic Award Payments,” regardless of their final league position, ensuring a consistent fee for their participation. The Solidarity Payments from the EFL amount to £5,190,000, with an additional Basic Award Payment of £3,210,000, totaling £8,400,000. These payments are exclusive to EFL clubs that do not receive Parachute Payments from the Premier League, meaning teams like Leeds United, Southampton, and Leicester City may receive more than Sunderland. EFL’s Solidarity Payments are calculated based on a percentage of the third-year Parachute Payment that a club relegated from the Premier League would receive, linked to the Premier League broadcasting rights’ value. Furthermore, Sunderland earns a facility fee whenever their matches are chosen for broadcast by EFL’s partner Sky Sports, which pays £75,000 to both home and away teams for each televised fixture. This season, Sunderland had 10 home games at the Stadium of Light and five away games selected for television coverage by Sky Sports. This selection has resulted in a total of £1,125,000 from Sky Sports for the 15 televised games this season. Overall, Sunderland expects to earn nearly eight figures, with an estimated £9,525,000 from the EFL and Sky Sports throughout the 2023-24 season in broadcast revenue, in addition to the Solidarity Payment and Basic Award Payment. Payments from televised games are typically processed and disbursed shortly after the respective fixtures have been played.
