Rohl must turn to play-off failures to sign ‘scary’ 8-goal free-agent for Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday will be looking to bolster all over the pitch this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday will lose a number of key players over the next few months, but their survival puts them in a good position in negotiations.

However, the club will look to offload some players, leaving significant gaps and a weakened squad depth.

Whatever happens, one position in particular requires significant improvement: up front.

This season, no Wednesday player reached double figures, but Josh Windass and Ike Ugbo finished second in scoring despite missing large chunks of the campaign.

Danny Rohl must consider his options as Ugbo returns to Troyes from his loan spell and Lee Gregory, Mallik Wilks, and Michael Smith may leave.

Dejphon Chansiri may spend money to bring in new players this summer, but there may be a free player who is a great value.

Sheffield Wednesday should target the’scary’ Republic of Ireland international.

Aaron Connolly joined Hull City from Brighton last summer on a one-year contract.

The striker had an excellent start in the Championship, scoring five goals in his first eight games.

Connolly scored eight goals in 28 appearances and 13 starts, but he quickly fell down the pecking order and has only made four appearances since January.

Despite having fewer goals per game, Ozan Tufan and Liam Delap were preferred over the Republic of Ireland international.

While new manager Michael Duff could offer Connolly a new contract, Sheffield Wednesday should take advantage of his current situation and try to sign him on a free transfer.

Dejphon Chansiri issued a statement of intent

If anyone can get him back firing and full of confidence, it’s Rohl, who has previous experience in a play-off battle and has scored five Premier League goals.

There is likely to be a lot of interest in Connolly this summer, but the Owls should not waste time pursuing the’scary’ 24-year-old and could look to sign him as soon as his contract expires.

The only issue for the Yorkshire outfit is his reported £23k-per-week contract. However, previous reports suggest that Dejphon Chansiri was willing to spend even more on a proven goalscorer earlier in the season.

It could be a real statement of intent for Wednesday, who need to significantly improve their transfer business over the previous summers.
