Sparks get critical Lexie Brown, Layshia Clarendon injury update

Injury: Lexie Brown and Layshia Clarendon in front of the Sparks arena
The Los Angeles Sparks make their way back to Crypto.com Arena after going winless in their final three road games. The Minnesota Lynx, a well-known foe in the Western Conference, will be the Sparks’ opponent, and it looks like they’ll have extra players. Prior to the game, neither Lexie Brown nor Layshia Clarendon were listed on the Sparks injury report.

After taking a hit to the head during the Sparks’ May 26 loss to the Dallas Wings, Layshia Clarendon had been sidelined. Since then, they had been following concussion protocol. Brown was forced to exit the game early due to what seemed to be an ankle injury sustained during the Sparks’ Sunday loss to the Phoenix Mercury.

The Sparks will be happy about this since this season, Layshia Clarendon and Lexie Brown have been the team’s best ball handlers. Brown is the starting shooting guard for the club, while Clarendon has been the starting point guard. Yet, the Sparks’ experience with Brown at the point has been uneven.

Following her signing of a two-year contract extension in February, Brown is currently in her third season with the Sparks. She has made eight appearances for the Sparks this season, averaging little over 26 minutes per contest. She has been averaging 2.6 rebounds and 8.5 points. 3.4 assists, 1.1 steals, and shooting percentages of 31.9 percent from the field, 30% from three-point range, and 86.7 percent from the free-throw line.

After re-signing as a free agent in the offseason, Clarendon is in his second season with the Sparks. They have played in five games so far this year, averaging little over 19 minutes each. They’ve been averaging 5.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.0 steals with splits of 47.4 percent shooting from the field, 60 percent shooting from the three-point line and 83.3 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

The Sparks have witnessed impressive early improvement from their highly valued rookies, Rickea Jackson and Cameron Brink, as the 2024 WNBA season has gone on. In the 2024 WNBA Draft, both players were lottery selections, going second and fourth, respectively. As they prepare for this upcoming three-game home stand, which starts with Wednesday’s game against the Lynx, the Sparks currently have an overall record of 2-6.
