Rockets to Welcome Victor Wembanyama for Toyota Center Debut

On Monday night, the Houston Rockets will host rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama at the Toyota Center for the first time in his career.

Houston — Victor Wembanyama will play his first game at the Toyota Center on Monday afternoon as the Houston Rockets kick off a quick two-game homestand against the San Antonio Spurs.

Wembanyama, who has lived up to the high expectations despite the Spurs’ 16-game losing skid, has not faced the Rockets in a month and a half.

Wembanyama made league history on Friday night when he recorded the first-ever 20-point, 20-rebound game for San Antonio against the Chicago Bulls. In the defeat, he added four assists and four blocks to his final total of 21 points and 20 rebounds.

“To me, it doesn’t hold much value if it came in a loss, but definitely a great achievement,” Wembanyama stated. “Hopefully, I can look back at this and think of it as a good performance someday.”

Twenty games into his fledgling career, Wembanyama’s 20–20 effort against the Bulls was only one of several outstanding showings.

In ten games, he has scored twenty points or more. On November 2, the Spurs defeated the Phoenix Suns 132-121, and he scored a career-high 38 points. San Antonio’s victory over the Suns was their last one before they went on an extended losing streak.

“Personally, he’s his own player,” stated Kevin Durant. He is going to carve himself his own niche in the game, setting himself apart from all previous players. Though you can attempt to draw comparisons, he will forge his own path.

Wembanyama’s first 20-point performance came in a 126-122 victory over the Rockets in overtime. Inside the Frost Bank Center, he finished with a career-high 21 points, 12 rebounds, three steals, and three blocks.

“He’s a competitor,” stated head coach Gregg Popovich following the victory. “He’s going to act decisively and take any necessary action in order to prevail. That’s how they’re all, though. And the Houston Rockets are, too. These are the guys that do that. They wouldn’t be where they are now if they weren’t competitive.”
