Before his return, San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich praises DeMar DeRozan of the Chicago Bulls.
On Friday, DeMar DeRozan will make his way back to Alamo City, and his previous team, the San Antonio Spurs, are already heaping accolades upon him.
After DeRozan was moved to the Spurs and Leonard to the Toronto Raptors, the story of the Spurs’ Kawhi Leonard came to an end, and the great guard for the Chicago Bulls spent three seasons in San Antonio. But DeRozan, the NBA’s 36th all-time scorer, has remained a fan favorite with the Spurs ever since he moved to and left from south Texas.
When Gregg Popovich addressed the media prior to Friday’s game, he gave DeRozan even more affection.According to Popovich, “He was a great teammate,” the San Antonio Express-News reported.”You could rely on him at all times. He was a reliable person who you could count on to outperform most others. However, he always had a smile on his face and was in a good mood. Being with him was enjoyable.”
With a combined three-year average of 21.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 6.2 assists, and one steal per game in 206 games, DeRozan recorded All-Star performance while playing for the Spurs. Still, he never was officially selected as an All-Star when he was in San Antonio.
Since joining the Bulls, he has already appeared in two All-Star games. Despite having a quality lineup, the squad hasn’t been able to gel as a unit.
Doug McDermott, a guard for the Spurs, spent his first three NBA seasons with the Bulls. Although their paths did not ever meet while playing for the Spurs, he has been facing DeRozan for almost ten years.
“A lot of respect for DeMar for the way he carries himself on the court and the way he conducts himself off the court,” McDermott stated. “Just an actual expert. He has our collective admiration because it took a great deal of bravery for him to open up and discuss mental health in that way.”
