Dejounte Murray Pens a Heartfelt Tribute to “The Greatest” Ex-Coach Gregg Popovich

Before that, he started his NBA career with the San Antonio Spurs. He has talked openly about his time there.

Not everything was positive, as Murray played down the Spurs” chances of success after they traded him in 2022. Despite the Spurs getting the top draft pick, Victor Wembanyama, and being in a good position, Murray had already expressed his feelings.

He has consistently shown his strong feelings for Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich.

After a fan mentioned his comments from the “From The Point with Trae Young” podcast, Murray reinforced his view.

POP Really The GREATEST!!!,” Dejounte Murray knits heartfelt message for ex-coach Gregg Popovich

“POP Really The GREATEST!!!! [100],” Murray wrote on X on May 10. “Can’t Nobody EVER Come In Between Of Our Bond!!!”

“He”s real, bro. He”s 1-of-1, bro,” Murray shared on Young’s podcast on April 8. “Shaking his hand, or hugging him, or just being in the same room as him you”ll just feel it. He”s different. There”s nobody – you can”t create this guy ever. Ever. He is who he is for a reason.”

Murray mentioned how Popovich humorously criticized him when he scored a career-high 44 points.

The Hawks won against the Boston Celtics 123-122, thanks to Murray’s efforts. He took 44 shots, his highest in a game.

“That”s our relationship,” Murray explained. “We talk s*** to each other, we tell each we love each other all the time. So he made it as a joke, but he made sure to let me know he love me and he”s watching.”

There”s talk about the Spurs being a good place for Murray if the Hawks trade him. The Hawks are considering changes this offseason, continuing from last summer and during the season.

Murray and Young have dismissed the trade rumors, but they are crucial to the Hawks’ plans. Whether the front office keeps them together is a key decision.

The Spurs are mentioned as a potential team for both star guards.

According to Greg Swartz from Bleacher Report, moving Murray back to the Spurs could be good for him. The Hawks, who traded for him in 2022, saw a decline in performance this season.

“The Atlanta Hawks traded for Murray in 2022 and moved him to more of an off-ball role next to Trae Young, but it”s been a failure for everyone involved. The Hawks went 36-46 this season, a seven-win drop from the year before they sent three first-round picks to the San Antonio Spurs for Murray,” Swartz wrote on May 8.

“The Hawks should be open to trading Murray to add better-fitting pieces around Young. A return to the Spurs would make a lot of sense for Murray, and teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and Orlando Magic could be searching for a backcourt upgrade this summer.”

Murray said he would be happy if Popovich showed interest in him.

Meanwhile, there are rumors that the Hawks discussed a trade involving Young with the Spurs before the trade deadline.
