Reading boss Ruben Selles responds after Derby County controversy

Reading boss Ruben Selles offered a measured response to inquiries regarding the crucial decisions that went against his team in their recent defeat to Derby County.

Despite Paul Warne’s side clinching a 2-1 victory in a dramatic match at Pride Park, securing their third successive win and maintaining their position second in League One, Reading felt aggrieved by certain calls. Specifically, they believed the first goal, netted by Dwight Gayle, was offside, and there was contention over whether Andy Yiadom fouled Conor Hourihane, resulting in a second yellow card and his subsequent dismissal.

In the wake of Yiadom’s expulsion, Joel Pereira fouled Gayle, who initially appeared to handle the ball before being brought down. The Reading faithful voiced their frustrations post-match, but Selles opted for a diplomatic stance in his remarks.

Expressing pride in his team’s resilience, Selles stated, “I am proud of the fight my team put in. They’re a very difficult team, one of the best in the category.” He acknowledged the challenges faced during the game, particularly following the red card, which left them with 10 men.

Despite the controversial decisions, Selles chose not to dwell extensively on them, instead focusing on his team’s competitive spirit. He emphasized their readiness to face any obstacles, stating, “We will fight against anyone and everyone in our way.”

Regarding the contentious calls, Selles mentioned reviewing the replays and forming his own opinion but refrained from delving into specifics. He concluded by highlighting his team’s determination and their ability to compete fiercely against formidable opponents, such as Derby County, despite adverse circumstances.
