Rangers’ performances under Philippe Clement haven’t been perfect, but they have improved over Michael Beale’s tenure.
In October, the former took up the latter’s position in the Rangers dugout, with a brief interim period filled by midfield guru Steven Davis.
Beale was the last manager to oversee a transfer window at the club, and in the summer, he brought nine players to Ibrox.
And while some, like loanee forward Abdallah Sima and goalkeeper Jack Butland, have made an impression, others haven’t.
This is especially true for players like Sam Lammers and Cyriel Dessers, who haven’t performed up to pace at Ibrox, despite high expectations. Kieran Dowell and Dujon Sterling, on the other hand, have hardly played since moving to Glasgow in the summer.
And now, following remarks made by Nils Koppen upon his appointment as Director of Football Recruitment on Friday, 1 November, their future at the Scottish club is in jeopardy.
According to Koppen, the Rangers’ official website, “the Chairman and CEO have both been clear in recent times that our player trading model has to function better and on a more regular basis.”
“I’m excited to collaborate with the club’s current scouting team to make sure we meet our objectives in the upcoming years.”
Given how new players might soon arrive at Ibrox, the latter comment will undoubtedly thrill fans, while the former comment might well scare the present bunch.
It’s obvious that Koppen wants to have a good impact at the team, and that might mean harsh decisions from the former PSV player as early as next month.
His specialty is player trade, and he could be able to convince Clement to let go of players who are having difficulty on the field in order to enhance the overall situation at Ibrox.
