Report: Rangers refused as target agrees terms

Rangers had intended to transfer Ridvan Yilmaz to Serie A in exchange for Doig, but the Turk is still going to Serie A. Instead, a £4.3 million deal to send the 21-year-old to Ligue 1 is on the books, and it is anticipated to conclude on Friday night.

According to Aouna, Josh Doig accepted OM’s offer and turned down all other offers. All he wants is Marseille.

“Progressive talks with Hellas Verona In order to seal the purchase, OM expects that its most recent offer would be accepted.

Yilmaz’s decision to travel to Verona without Doig visiting Glasgow may not have seemed wise, but it appears that no other option but to migrate to southern France could have persuaded him.

The cost of acquiring a left-back would have been high for the Light Blues to pay given that Philippe Clement appears to be prioritizing strikers this month. However, if two players were going in either direction, a deal might have been made to postpone the expense until the summer.

Unless Clement and his team have another plan in place, there may be a case to terminate Yilmaz’s loan to Italy because the reciprocal aspect of the move appears to have failed.

Were it a matter of Doig being amenable to a return to the SPFL and just the finances between the clubs being the issue then perhaps there would have been some wiggle room.

But if the former Hibs man has made a categorical decision that it is Marseille or nowhere then it looks like there isn’t much that Rangers can do to change that.

With Borna Barisic’s future also routinely questioned, and an alternative to the 31-year-old Croatian as the starter long-term required either way, Yilmaz leaving is only going to make that a more pressing concern.

The position has been a difficult one ever since Calvin Bassey was sold to Ajax following his eye-catching performances in the run to the Europa League final under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, and it looks like it is continuing to prove complicated again this month.
