Rangers message to Celtics supporters via Top lagend in real time on talkSPORT

Ally McCoist has fired a jibe at Celtic live on air following Rangers’ Viaplay Cup win, suggesting that he hopes the Hoops are battered in the New Year.

The gap between the two Glasgow clubs has been closed in recent weeks, with Philippe Clement’s Light Blues now sitting only five points behind Brendan Rodgers’ side, with two games in hand over the reigning champions.

With the title race well and truly back on in Scotland, McCoist has admitted that although he hopes that Celtic fans enjoy the festive period, he still wants Rangers to “batter” the Hoops in the new year.

Speaking on talkSPORT (19 December, 6:20) Jeff Stelling asked: “I imagine you would have a better Christmas message for kids out there that are Celtic fans Ally?”

McCoist quickly replied: “I hope you have a wonderful Christmas. But I hope we batter you in the new year.”

It’s safe to say that Rangers supporters are still feeling a bit more confident following their Viaplay Cup win over Aberdeen. The Light Blues fans are beginning to genuinely believe that they are capable of closing the gap to Celtic and lifting the Premiership title this season.

The Hoops have shown in recent weeks that they are not invincible, losing to both Hearts and Kilmarnock in the Premiership and that has left a window of opportunity for Clement’s side to take the lead if they manage to win their games in hand.

While the games in hand could prove to be crucial in the race for the title this season, perhaps the more important games this season will be the Old Firm derbies and McCoist’s hope that the Light Blues will batter Celtic in the new year will be shared by all supporters.

The first derby clash of the season was incredibly disappointing from a Rangers perspective as the Gers failed to lay a glove on Brendan Rodgers’ side. Now under the management of Clement at Ibrox, they’ll be out for revenge and they have the hunger to lift more silverware this season.

Hopefully, Celtic supporters will have a lovely Christmas as McCoist suggested, but Rangers supporters will be hoping the Hoops’ festive feeling is curtailed nice and early on the 30 December.
