Rangers defeated Aberdeen 1-0 to win the League Cup, giving them their first League Cup victory in thirteen years.
The Gers squad lapped in the acclaim of their adoring fans after a 1-0 Viaplay Cup final win over Aberdeen. Rangers fans lined the streets of Ibrox and Govan to greet the team bus like heroes.
After coming close twice before losing to Celtic twice at Hampden in 2019 and 2022, respectively, James Tavernier’s goal secured their first trophy lift in the tournament since 2010. However, it was third time lucky for the Light Blues, as the right-back hammered home the ball late in the game to send the blue half of Glasgow wild and give Philippe Clement his first winners medal at the club despite taking over for just two months.
After winning the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup in previous years, Rangers supporters were eager to win the Viaplay Cup. They were eager to complete the hat-trick of trophies as the team entered a new era, and they succeeded in doing so with spectacular celebrations at Hampden and around the city. And when captain Tavernier stepped off the coach to the loudest cheer of all, he led the audience in a lion’s roar.
But the biggest cheer of all went to skipper and matchwinner Tavernier, who turned around to the fans, celebrating with a clenched fist before shouting ‘Come on!’.
Rangers are now the only club who can win the treble, and with Celtic losing to Hearts at Parkhead on Saturday, they can go top if they win their two games in hand – which makes the derby at the end of the month infinitely more interesting.
