Philippe Clement to suffer midfield headache as Dujon Sterling wows despite Old Firm derby loss

Though many have realized that Sterling is a natural full-back by trade and has had to deputize in midfield due to a multitude of injuries plaguing the starting XI, Dujon Sterling will be a managerial nightmare for Philippe Clement as Rangers’ current injuries begin to return to the squad. Nico Raskin, Ryan Jack, Steven Davis, and Tom Lawrence are all set to recover from their respective injuries in January, but Sterling has been performing incredibly well in their absence, making it extremely difficult to drop the 24-year-old.

Rangers

The former Chelsea youth star has not faltered despite playing out of position, and he was among the better players in a dismal 2-1 Old Firm derby loss to Celtic.

Paulo Bernardo, Callum McGregor, and Matt O’Riley form a formidable midfield that Sterling only managed an 85% pass completion rate against. In addition, he won nine ground battles, made 10 recoveries, intercepted four passes, and became the player on the field with the most fouls (6).[FotMob]

The former defender was cautioned for his challenge on Bernardo, but his excitement and intensity made him stand out and gave the impression that he cared about the outcome. Not all of his teammates fit this description.

Rangers

Despite good showing and a goal on his return to the starting XI against St Johnstone and Motherwell, Clement preferred Sterling to Kieran Dowell against Celtic. Additionally, Jose Cifuentes had to contend with a bench position.

It will be intriguing to watch what Clement does with Sterling’s starting position whenever players like Jack and Raskin return. Although he is unlikely to replace Ridvan Yilmaz or James Tavernier at full back, he might find it difficult to equal the skill level of the injured midfield pair.
