The manager of Rangers, Philippe Clement, has acknowledged that he has already discussed a new deal with midfielder John Lundstram.
Under the Belgian boss, John Lundstram has been reviving at Ibrox and has been one of Rangers’ best players recently. He is 29 years old.
The contract of the former Sheffield United midfield player expires at the end of the current campaign, which has sparked a lot of discussion about a possible extension for the player.
After the Rangers defeated Aberdeen in the League Cup Final, Philippe Clement spoke with ViaPlay about the significance of John Lundstram and acknowledged that the player is on his mind for a new deal.
Philippe Clement’s admission in the John Lundstram deal
Journalist Emma Dodds questioned Rangers manager Philippe Clement over the circumstances behind John Lundstram’s contract.
Although the Ibrox leader acknowledges that preliminary talks have already occurred, he thinks the matter will be postponed until the upcoming weeks and months.
It comes with the fact that John Lundstram has been Philipp Clement’s constant companion ever since the Belgian joined the team.
Philippe Clement responded, “Yes, of course, I’m thinking about that [John Lundstram’s contract].” However, that is a topic for discussion in the upcoming weeks and months.
“I’ve already discussed that with him. Yes, it will continue for the upcoming weeks and months since I know how he feels and he knows how I feel.
Midfielder for Rangers “important in many ways”
Former Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield also questioned Philippe Clement on John Lundstram’s place in his team.
The former Ibrox midfielder currently plays for Charlotte FC in the Major League Soccer, although he was a pundit for the League Cup Final at Hampden Park.
John Lundstram is a leader in the Rangers team, according to Clement, who also thinks the midfield player is “important in many ways” at Ibrox.
He’s significant in a lot of ways, Clement remarked. He is a someone who never conceals.
“He has a constant desire for the ball and is aware of the tactical narrative we must follow each game as it evolves to exploit weaknesses in the opposition.
He is a leader both on the field and in the locker room, and on the field you need a right hand like his.
And I currently have a few. Many of our players assume accountability; I just need to say something to get their understanding, and they thereby support the team.
“So, having guys like that is crucial for a manager to know.”
Since moving from the Premier League to Rangers in 2021, John Lundstram has made 127 appearances for the Ibrox club overall, including 27 this season.
