Opinion: Rangers have an obvious opportunity to capture the £6 million Premier League defender if he is expelled from training.

Rangers now have a serious opportunity to take advantage of the January transfer window and capture Scott McKenna, defender for Nottingham Forest.

Nottingham Forest ready to axe Scott McKenna and Rangers should be interested

In January, we want to see Philippe Clement bolster his back line for the Rangers.

While Connor Goldson is still a valuable member of the Rangers defense, it has been difficult to find a partner for him.

Leon Balogun isn’t a long-term solution, John Souttar isn’t exactly dependable due to his injury history, and Ben Davies hasn’t made an adequate impression.

It’s time for the Rangers to get a new defense, and Clement should be interested in the news that broke today.

Nottingham Forest ready to axe Scott McKenna and Rangers should be interested

Scotland defender Scott McKenna is set to be fired by Nottingham Forest in January, according to a report from TEAMtalk earlier today.

It has been more than three years since the 27-year-old moved from Aberdeen for £6 million, and his contract expires in the summer. Forest appears to want to sell before he leaves for nothing.

The Telegraph also reports that due to a disagreement over his contract, McKenna is training separately from the Forest first squad.

The writing is apparently on the wall for owner Evangelos Marinakis, who is said to have a “fractious relationship” with McKenna’s agent.

We would strongly advise Rangers to seize this fantastic opportunity in January.

Examine the Rangers’ January plan; with only six months remaining on their contracts, both Todd Cantwell and Nicholas Raskin were signed in comparatively cheap deals.

With the Rangers maybe able to add genuine value without going over budget, McKenna finds himself in a similar situation to the one that occurred with Jose Cifuentes during the summer.

Nottingham Forest Training Session

For the Rangers, McKenna checks a lot of boxes, starting with his eligibility as a homegrown player.

For European competitions, that is essential, and McKenna has experience playing the Scottish game from his stint at Aberdeen.

At 27, McKenna is in terrific health and has a wealth of experience from both Scotland and the Premier League without, to use more kind language, being past it.

Alongside Goldson, the Scot offers Rangers the balance they’ve been looking for because he’s a natural left-footer.

After Calvin Bassey left, Davies was meant to be that player, but McKenna might be the right choice for Clement.

Wages may be a barrier, but if McKenna is interested in moving to Ibrox in January, we want Rangers to make it happen so that Clement’s defense is permanently strengthened.
