In jest, his studio colleague said, “That’s the Freudian slip of the day, possibly of the month so far.”

Skilled journalist Downie laughed after realizing his error and accepted the setback with excellent grace.

“We are disappointed that Michael is leaving Sunderland AFC,” stated Kristjaan Speakman, sporting director of Sunderland. Since it hasn’t been obvious that we want to improve, we accept full responsibility and believe that taking decisive action is in the best interests of the Club.

“We send our best wishes for Michael’s future as he departs after a trying few months. In order to guarantee that we finish as high in the league as possible, our attention is now on the players and helping Mike Dodds in the remaining games.

“We will provide our supporters with additional updates as and when noteworthy developments occur.”
