Rangers announced on Tuesday, December 19, that they will not have any fans present for their league matchup with Celtic the following Saturday.
With just five points separating the two Glasgow giants from one other, this matchup at Celtic Park might have a significant impact on the Scottish title race.
Although Rangers won a case presented to an SPFL Board Sub-Committee, their away allocation was refused.
Although the Sub-Committee agreed with Rangers that Celtic’s policy of not giving Rangers supporters any tickets was irrational, the decision has not been reversed in time for the game.
Maguire thinks that the failure of both clubs’ owners to provide a secure atmosphere for away fans is their fault.
“Hatred between fans is part of the game’s inherent trait of tribalism in football, which has existed since the game’s very beginning,” Maguire said to Sean Fisher of Football Insider.
“It’s unfortunate that there isn’t now a match between Celtic and Rangers supporters.
“Manchester United can play Manchester City and Leeds, and Liverpool can play Everton and Man United.”
“Away fans are welcome to attend Spurs’ games against Chelsea, Arsenal, and West Ham.”
It is quite unfortunate that this cannot happen at Celtic Park since visiting fans heighten the energy and produce
tension.
“Part of the mystery and thrill of the game is the rivalry between the home and away fans.
“To have this taken away is a sign of the leadership of both clubs failing to create an atmosphere where both fans can support the teams they care about.”
