Europa League midfielder describes his move to Rangers as a “near-miss” since the requirements weren’t completed

Kartal Yilmaz discusses the reasons behind the “near-miss” in the possible Rangers move

In the summer of 2022, Kartan Yilmaz gave an explanation for why he did not go from Besiktas to the Rangers, citing “some conditions not met.”

The 23-year-old has made eight Super Lig appearances this season while on loan at Kayserispor from the Turkish powerhouses, and his loan team is vying for European slots.

Yilmaz, who has played for Besiktas in the Europa League, has a clear chance to have a very different life. Rangers expressed interest in the young midfield player last year, but in the end, he chose not to play at Ibrox with his namesake, Ridvan Yilmaz.

In an interview with Spor Haberleri, he stated, “At that time, Glasgow Rangers had a suitor for me after Ridvan Yilmaz.” “I am aware of this firsthand, but some requirements were not fulfilled at the time, therefore the transfer did not occur.

Naturally, only time will tell what transpires during the upcoming term. I think I’ll quickly realize my ambition of living in Europe.

An eschewed chance?

Despite playing in just four league games the previous season, Ridvan has taken some time to become a regular in Philippe Clement’s lineup and has already made seven appearances this season.

With Kartal, who seems to have gone very close to joining the Gers last year, this raises the question “what if?” After five U21 appearances, the young player’s career has subsequently stagnated. He had multiple loans while playing for Besiktas, and he has yet to make an impact for Turkey.

Despite his young age, Yilmaz has experience playing in the Europa League. He made his Besiktas European debut in the 2019–20 season, playing 101 minutes in two games on each side of his 19th birthday.

Furthermore, Yilmaz’s absence seems like less of a story now that Rangers have made midfield additions like Kieran Dowell, Todd Cantwell, and Jose Cifuentes.

Naturally, adding intriguing young players to the club is essential, but as more and more prospects make their way into the starting lineup, the Gers have demonstrated the strength of their own academy system.

Rangers should not undervalue their present players while they continue to assemble a talented roster. The Turkish midfielder may have made an intriguing future star.
