‘We had agreed’: Director breaks silence as £7m ace is linked with Rangers move

The sports director of Standard Liege has spoken out about the situation involving Steven Alzate in light of rumors that Rangers has received an offer for the midfield player from Brighton and Hove Albion, a Premier League team.

Having to rely on a re-call clause and hope that the phone doesn’t ring is definitely not the best scenario to be in, Standard Liege.

Currently serving a second season of loan at the Belgian team is Steven Alzate. However, Brighton would seize the chance to sell in January rather than risk losing the Colombian international, who was born in London, for free in July because his contract expires the following summer.

Brighton is attempting to persuade Rangers to relinquish ownership of Alzate, according to Belgian writer Sacha Tavolieri, who wrote on X.

And with Alzate’s future in Brighton’s hands, Standard Liege is left with no choice but to wait.

Fergal Harkin tells Voetbal Krant, “We had agreed with their (parent) clubs that they could be recalled in January,” with Isaac Hayden, another loanee, slated to return to Newcastle United and Alzate’s future undetermined.

“Steven is recuperating from a Brighton ankle injury. He is still a member of our team because the recall option has not yet been used.

Philippe Clement is planning a busy January.

But that would all change if the Rangers decided to seize the chance that was presented to them. Though Tavolieri maintains that a midfielder, even one as brilliant and technically gifted as Alzate, is not currently a priority for a Rangers team that seems to have set their sights on a left-back and another attacker after bringing in Fabio Silva on loan from Wolves, it remains to be seen if they will actually do that.

Alzate, a former Brighton regular under Graham Potter, is probably going to be available for less than the £7 million asking price that The Seagulls requested during the summer, when Sevilla and Fiorentina were expressing interest.

Rangers has also been given the opportunity to sign Emmanuel Dennis, a £20 million forgotten man from Nottingham Forest, another misfit in the Premier League.
