Club hope Rangers sign their £7m misfit but he’s ‘not a priority’ for Clement

Premier League outfit Brighton and Hove Albion are reportedly trying to tempt Rangers to sign Steven Alzate but the Colombia international is not currently a target for the Glasgow giants.

If there is one player who can perhaps be viewed as a victim of Brighton’s recent success, it’s maybe Steven Alzate.

A fixture at one point in the Graham Potter era, Alzate went from semi-regular starter to back-up in next to no time The Amex, and eventually found himself being farmed out on loan in search of the sort of minutes he used to command on the South Coast.

Alzate, who scored a famous winner away at Liverpool in 2021, has spent the last year-and-a-half on loan at Standard Liege in Belgium. And, with his contract expiring next summer, this represents Brighton’s last chance to cash in.

Hence why Roberto de Zerbi’s side are so keen to drum up offers, Belgian reporter Sacha Tavolieri explaining the situation on X amid reports linking Alzate with a Rangers side who signed Abdallam Sima on loan from The Seagulls a few months ago.

Rangers not convinced by Steven Alzate option

“For Steven Alzate, Brighton tried to convince Rangers officials to sell him as he’s free in June 2024,” Tavolieri writes. “But it seems that his profile’s not a priority yet.”

A classy, cultured central midfielder – Alzate possesses the technical ability you’d expect from a man who impressed the forward-thinking, possession-focused Potter – Rangers may have jumped at the opportunity to bring the London-born 25-year-old to Ibrox in another era.

But reinforcements in central midfield are simply not a necessity at the present juncture.

Brighton want midfielder sold

Philippe Clement already has John Lundstram, Ryan Jack, Kieran Dowell, Jose Cifuentes, Todd Cantwell and Tom Lawrence in his ranks. Nicolas Raskin should return from injury soon enough. Dujon Sterling has also proven himself to be more than effective in a central midfield role of late.

Alzate, per The Telegraph, was a target for Fiorentina and Sevilla over the summer. Brighton wanted £7 million at the time, and would likely accept an even lower fee at this stage with his stage as his contract runs down.
