Celtic outearn Rangers in transfer revenue as the long-term benefits of their player trading strategy

Although the Gers have only generated significant profits on three stars, the champions have sold several famous names, like Virgil Van Dijk, for large sums of money.

Over the past ten seasons, transfers have brought in £33 million for Celtic while costing Rangers £10 million.

The CIES Football Observatory has released new data that tracks clubs’ net transfer spend for the current campaign, the prior five seasons, and the overall number of transfers (both in and out) during the last ten seasons. Furthermore, the figures demonstrate that the champions’ player trading strategy is operating as intended.

After joining for comparatively little money, players like Josip Juranovic, Jota, Victor Wanyama, Gary Hooper, Fraser Forster, Virgil Van Dijk, Moussa Dembele, Jeremie Frimpong, Odsonne Edouard, and Jota were all transferred for large sums of money. And after rising through the ranks, Kieran Tierney’s £25 million move to Arsenal in 2019 was purely profitable. In contrast, over the past ten years, Rangers’ outgoings have led to significantly more reasonable fees. The only moves that resulted in a sizable sum were Nathan Patterson joining Everton, Calvin Bassey moving to Ajax for a club record, and Joe Aribo joining Southampton.

But because of Michael Beale’s summer spending binge, the Light Blues are down £5 million this season. In the meantime, Celtic is £6 million in the red.
