Boyd is taken aback when Sutton says, “I don’t like it,” in response to Clement’s interview on Sky Sports.

Chris Sutton never stays silent on Rangers, especially when it allows him to poke fun at the team.

The performance might have and could have been more, according to Gers manager Philippe Clement, after the team defeated Hearts 1-0 in a hard-fought but well-deserved victory.

As part of the Sky Sports coverage of the game, Chris Sutton was asked about Clement’s approach with Rangers and interview and the ex-Celtic striker surprised his colleagues in the studio with his response.

Chris Sutton gives Rangers boss backhanded compliment

The Belgian has arrived at Ibrox and simplified things from day one.

All he wants to do is win.

Nothing complicated.

He also, as we saw with his handling of the Todd Cantwell incident, isn’t one for drama or soap operas.

In short, he’s not one to cut off his nose to spite his face.

Pundits have spent the last 12 months regularly questioning our manager and tactics as we lurched from one disaster to another.

However, on this occasion Chris Sutton was full of praise, through gritted teeth, for the Rangers manager.

“I don’t like it, because Rangers seem to have a manager who talks common sense.”

Sutton is correct; Philippe Clement doesn’t hold back when speaking or use euphemisms.

Neither too high nor too low does he go.

The fact that Clement has been forthright about player performances and injuries to his club while avoiding hyperbole and sticking to the main point that the team as a whole is everything has been refreshing.

Sutton mentioned the possibility of a true title competition as well, so perhaps this is where his worry stems from.

Rangers are led by a capable manager with a track record of winning championships and assembling winning teams.

It’s unfortunate that he took over a team beset by problems and trailing the league by seven points.
