Gordon Dalziel, a former striker for Rangers, criticized Cyriel Dessers for his performance against Celtic, stating that the match was too difficult for him.
Dessers played the full ninety minutes as Philippe Clement’s first loss as Ibrox manager occurred at Parkhead, and he was unable to have the desired effect.
The Nigerian international missed a great opportunity to score after Alistair Johnston made a mistake, taking a long time to get off the mark.
“His confidence was high going into the game,” Dalziel stated on the Clyde 1 Superscoreboard. “He has been receiving positive feedback from the fans and scoring goals, but this is the moment to step up and be recognized.
“He appeared a little overwhelmed by the game, but the Celtic center backs deserve all the credit for sticking with him. However, you were never sure he would score even when he was in advantageous circumstances.”
James Tavernier, meantime, is aware that Rangers must swiftly get past their disappointment with the Old Firm when they visit Kilmarnock on Tuesday night.
The Gers captain scored a fantastic free-kick in the 88th minute to give the Scottish champions a nervous finish. Prior to Rangers defender Leon Balogun being sent off at the 2-0 mark for denying Celtic striker Daizen Maeda a clear chance to score, the team had been leading through goals from Kyogo Furuhashi and Paulo Bernardo.
Tavernier is eager to make amends with Killie in the last game before the Christmas break at Ibrox.
“It is a big game and obviously we have to play really good football because Kilmarnock are in form,” he said on RangersTV.
“We must play to the best of our abilities, as directed by the management.
“There are plenty of games after the break, so it’s important to finish with the three points.”
“They were more clinical than us,” Tavernier said, reflecting on their devastating loss to their Old Firm rivals that dashed their ambitions of winning the championship. Yes, we did produce a few really nice opportunities, but we were unable to locate the back of the net.
It could have been a different score, but it wasn’t meant to be. We simply need to be a little more clinical in our pursuit of that objective.
“There are, of course, advantages to be had, and as I mentioned a few weeks ago, there are lots of games to play. And we’ll keep up our arduous effort.
“We’re going to make sure we put three points on the board in our crucial game on Tuesday before the break.”
