The Light Blues had been linked with a move for the 21-year-old, with reports from Football Scotland [13 December] suggesting that he may be available for a cut-price fee in January as Aberdeen don’t want to lose him for free at the end of the season.
Barron was an unused substitute during Rangers 1-0 win over Barry Robson’s side in the Viaplay Cup final and Halliday was surprised to not see him introduced, admitting that he would love to have the midfielder in Philippe Clement’s side.
Speaking on Open Goal (19 December, 1:05:40) when asked if he’d take Barron at Ibrox, he said: “Aye, yeah I like him, I think he’s good. Again I’ve said it before as well, everybody just says he’s this dog but he’s not.
“He’s controlled on the ball as well, so sharp.”
It might not be a bad thing for Rangers to look within Scotland for some slightly younger heads to add to their midfield, especially considering a number of Clement’s options at Ibrox aren’t exactly getting any younger.
The likes of John Lundstram and Ryan Jack are heading towards the back end of their careers and while Jose Cifuentes and Nicolas Raskin have been signed to add a bit more youth in the middle of the park, they have encountered their own issues in terms of injury and form so far this season.
As Halliday suggested, most people in Scottish football view Barron as this “dog” of a midfielder given his tenacity and off-the-ball work ethic, but he does possess some quality in possession that would likely see him be a success at Ibrox.
If the deal can be completed at a cut price as originally reported, it may be too good an option for the Light Blues to pass up. As such a young bright prospect, the 21-year-old will not only bring quality but will likely offer the Gers some sell-on value to fit the player trading model in place in Glasgow.
