Angry Ally McCoist has torn into the new hate crime statute in Scotland, alleging he and his fellow Rangers fans will break it against Celtic on Sunday.

The bill, voted by MSPs in 2021, was signed into law on Monday and aims to fight abuse that’stirs up hatred’ based on age, religion, sexual orientation, transgender identity, or disability. McCoist, who hailed the law’s loudest detractor JK Rowling, is aghast over its arrival in Scotland. He fears he and his fellow Ibrox supporters will be in the crosshairs of it when Philip Clement’s team meet their biggest opponents this weekend.

McCoist told talkSPORT: “We have a hate bill. A hate bill has been passed in the country. Next Sunday at Ibrox, I and 48,000 others will violate the hate bill by attending the Rangers vs Celtic game. It’s craziness.”

And McCoist believes officers in blue will oppose the law, which has gone into effect due to internal concerns that it will undermine public trust in the force.

The Rangers legend commented, “That’s exactly what the police think (impossible to enforce).” The police spokesperson has come out and said more or less the same thing. He clearly can’t because he’ll get himself into trouble. He hinted it, and everyone with two brain cells understands it’s insane. I have not spoken to anyone in our country who believes it is a good idea.”
