View: Rangers must ignore sentiment as ace seeks contract talks at Ibrox.

Leon Balogun is a popular figure among Rangers fans, not least because his attitude is always on point.

He was released by former manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst at the end of the 2021-2022 Scottish Premiership season, which surprised many.

A little more than a year later, Michael Beale brought the experienced centre-back back to Glasgow to strengthen his defensive options.

It is a decision that has certainly paid off, with Balogun making 16 appearances for the Rangers across all competitions this season.

Balogun led the Gers to a 2-0 victory over Hearts at Hampden Park on Sunday (21 April), advancing to the Scottish Cup final against Celtic.

According to the Daily Record (23 April), Balogun expressed his desire to stay with the club for the upcoming season after his performance.

“I hope so. Have there been discussions about my future? Not yet. I’m really not sure what will happen. “I believe those decisions will be made within the club over the next few weeks,” he said.

“I’m hoping for a more timely notification than the last time! I’d like to think I can be quite positive about the manager choosing me on Sunday, but I can’t really tell you because I don’t know yet.”

Rangers have a few things to consider here. On the one hand, Balogun has proven to be a valuable squad member this season, and his experience can be extremely beneficial in the dressing room.

However, Philippe Clement has previously stated that he does not want a squad heavy with players who have no resale value.

Should Rangers give Leon Balogun a new contract at Ibrox?

Balogun is currently 35 years old and will soon turn 36. That shouldn’t be a major concern if he contributes well on the pitch.

Rangers, on the other hand, must remove sentiment from the equation in this case. If they believe Balogun still has a lot to offer, let’s negotiate a new contract.

However, if there are opportunities to reduce the squad’s age and bring in talent that could generate a tidy little profit, this must be considered.

Whatever happens, it’s important to communicate well with Balogun because his dedication to the cause means he deserves a lot of respect.
