The £3 million player for Rangers has been termed a huge “disappointment” and a flop.

Rangers' £3m man labelled a flop as he's called a big 'disappointment'

Rangers midfielder Ianis Hagi is turning into ‘one of the disappointments of the season’ over in Spain with the Scottish Premiership loanee struggling to make his mark in La Liga with Deportivo Alaves.

There isn’t a more obvious contrast between Ianis Hagi’s impact on the Romanian national team and Alaves at the club level.

It was him who, just a few months prior, propelled Romania into the European Championships this summer with a strong victory over Israel. In fact, Hagi has contributed four goals to the Tricolorii’s score in his last four games (two goals, two assists).

With just one assist in his 16 outings in La Liga, that is easily more than he has accomplished there. While all is going on, a player who came to the Mendizorroza with high expectations from Scottish powerhouse Rangers appears likely to leave by the back door, having played less than 20 of the last 630 possible minutes.

His time in Spain turned out to be less transformative and more of a labor for a man who had a significant knee injury at Ibrox and fell out of favor.

According to local reporter Inaki Inigo, “Hagi is actually one of the season’s disappointments,” as stated on the Noticias de Alava website.

Glasgow gave him very positive feedback and he came to Mendizorroza to make a difference. However, he hasn’t been able to adjust to La Liga’s standards thus far.

That in and of itself is unexpected.

Hagi more than makes up for his lack of speed with his technical skill. A player who signed a £3 million contract with Rangers from Genk was expected to profit from the slower tempo of Spanish football. However, this is untrue.

It is quite doubtful that Alaves will want to keep Hagi on after the summer given his ethereal and unproductive tendency to float through games.

“Technique is not everything (necessary) to shine at the highest level, even though no one doubts his quality with the ball at his feet,” Inigo continues.

“He has received zero attention for the great majority of his performances.”

The decision to take over Ianis Hagi belongs to Philippe Clement.

Hagi’s Rangers contract is still valid for another two years.
Philippe Clement has the potential to revitalize his career at Ibrox. With people like Todd Cantwell, Ridvan Yilmaz, and Cyriel Dessers, he has accomplished precisely that. However, the Rangers’ decision-makers may also be excused for believing that they are up against a player who could miss the next two seasons of his career due to injury and subpar play.

Hagi’s difficulties, however, stand in sharp contrast to Sam Lammers’ influence in Utrecht.Back in the Eredivisie, the Dutchman is perhaps playing some of his greatest football in five years.
