For those who were undervaluing the Ibrox captain’s achievement of becoming the highest-scoring defender in British football history, Andy Townsend had a message.
The critics have been told that it doesn’t matter what level James Tavernier has scored the majority of his goals at, and he has gone on to become the highest scoring defender in British football history.
The Rangers skipper scored his team’s 3-1 triumph over Hibs at Ibrox on Saturday, his 131st goal of the season coming via a neat volley. That goal put Tavernier at the top of the goal rankings, surpassing former Scotland international Graham Alexander, who needed just over half the game to score an excellent goal of his own. The strike came after a rare missed penalty.
TalkSport hosts Jeff Stelling and Andy Townsend praised Tavernier greatly, mentioning him by name along with Steve Bruce and Stuart Pearce. Tavernier has been a successful scorer. Additionally, Townsend disregarded the commonly applied Scottish football caution, telling anyone attempting to minimize the 32-year-old’s accomplishment to reconsider.
He remarked, “That is quite the record.” Over the years, there have been a few. Stuart Pearce, nicknamed Pearcey, used to receive quite a few, and whenever they attack a free-kick or corner, defenders are constantly there to stop them. They appear to be eager to score. It doesn’t surprise me that Steve Bruce led Manchester United in scoring in one season.
“How many James Tavernier does he have? 131? I’m happy for him.
“I don’t give a damn; people can argue about whether he’s scoring goals in Scotland or anything else. If, despite being a defender by trade, you find yourself with 130 goals or more, you’re doing something right. It’s exquisitely wonderful.
