Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland is expected to earn a long-awaited England recall.
Gareth Southgate will name his Three Lions squad on Thursday for the upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Belgium at Wembley. And Sky Sports report that the Rangers number one is in strong contention to be included.
He has nine caps for his country, with the last coming almost six years ago. Southgate recently admitted Butland was “on the radar” after impressing England goalie coach Martin Margetson through his club performances.
Butland has kept an outstanding 17 clean sheets from Rangers’ 28 Scottish Premiership fixtures this season and has displayed his qualities during their Europa League and domestic cup success too.
Newcastle United stopper Nick Pope is injured and Aaron Ramsdale has dropped down the pecking order at Arsenal, which opens up the prospect of Butland being among the 23-man squad to go to the Euros this summer.
Rangers boss Philippe Clement recently spoke of Butland’s chances of returning to the England fold.
He said: “I would love that he would be there because he deserves, he is ready in that way. If he deserves enough, that is the decision of Southgate of course.
“He (Butland) has been really good for the team although he has had less to do in the last couple of weeks. But he keeps the same concentration, the same seriousness and he is important in the dressing room and in training, and he is going to be important in the next couple of weeks and months because we have a lot of games to go and a lot of important games where you need players with personality.”
