Following Sunday’s Sky Sports Cup victory, Rangers has taken aim at ‘discriminatory and misogynistic comments’ made in the aftermath of the women’s game.
On Sunday afternoon, Jo Potter’s team easily defeated Partick Thistle, 4-1.
With the Scottish Cup and SWPL title very much up for grabs, the Ibrox club took a step closer to a possible treble this season with goals from Mia McAulay, Rachel Rowe, Rio Hardy, and Olivia McLoughlin.
But in the days following the match, a few well-known people have commented on social media regarding the calibre of women’s football.
Rangers assert that they are united in their opposition to such “disgraceful and homophobic slurs.”
Following Sunday’s Sky Sports Cup Final, Rangers FC has been made aware of misogynistic and discriminatory remarks made about the women’s game, according to a statement released by the club.
“As a club, we unite in the strongest possible terms against these deplorable and homophobic remarks.
“We are unwavering in our desire to further the women’s game across the country which goes from strength to strength, and will support all players in challenging those who hold extremely outdated and foul views of women’s football.”
Potter, the head coach of the Gers, announced the team’s goal for the rest of the season after the game.
As Potter put it, “I think it is big.” It all comes down to momentum. Getting the first trophy is never easy. We are the ones at the front of the league who are most likely to be attacked; we are always present and still waiting to be discovered. Everyone aspires to be like us. We anticipate it.
It’s how we handle that pressure and how we function under it. That seems like a major moment for today. I told the girls, “This is your trophy, make sure you keep your hands on it and retain it,” knowing that it’s never easy to hold onto a trophy. We attempt the next one once more.”
