“Not the best business”: Jamie Murphy disagrees with Andy Walker’s assertion that it would be bad for a Rangers star to leave Ibrox in the summer.

Andy Walker claims it won't be 'the best business' if Rangers star leaves Ibrox in summer, Jamie Murphy disagrees

Andy Walker, a former Celtic striker, thinks it would be a bad idea for a Rangers player to leave the Ibrox giants in the summer for nothing at all.The Light Blues are now one point behind Celtic in the fierce Scottish Premiership championship battle that is taking place between the two teams.

They do, however, have a game in hand over the Hoops after their league match against Dundee was called off on Sunday because of a flooded field at Dens Park.

Despite the international break, manager Philippe Clement has a lot on his mind to consider, including getting ready for his first team squad’s four games in 14 days.

Among those games is an explosive Old Firm derby at Ibrox, which is expected to be one of the most eagerly awaited Rangers vs. Celtic games in a long time.

As the Rangers coach, Clement won’t be planning too far ahead for his next games, but he must begin seriously considering the six Gers players who have expiring contracts this summer.

In only a few months, the contracts of Jon McLaughlin, Kemar Roofe, Ryan Jack, Leon Balogun, and John Lundstram will expire.Another is Borna Barisic, but he seems to have a somewhat more certain future than the others.

This is due to many rumors indicating that the left-back is getting close to joining Turkish team Trabzonspor when the current campaign concludes. According to a Croatian site, personal conditions have already been agreed upon.

For Barisic, who joined the team in 2018 and has since made over 230 appearances for the Govan club [Transfermarkt], it would represent the end of an era.

Walker, along with former Gers winger Jamie Murphy, believes Rangers made a grave mistake by sending Barisic off for nothing in the summer.

Walker’s opinion about Barisic’s free departure

Jamie Murphy and Andy Walker were guests on The Go Radio Football Show. The former Celtics player believes that Rangers ought to have looked to cash in on Borna Barisic at some point because of how long he has been a member of the team.

“I think he (Barisic) has been really good,” Walker said. As a left-back, his crossing has been excellent.

“Letting someone as talented as that leave at the end of their contract and relocate for free is perhaps not the greatest business decision.

“Ideally, you should aim to receive payment for any player who has been with the team for that length of time before his contract expires.”

Jamie Murphy disagreed.

Murphy, who made 29 appearances for Rangers between 2018 and 2021 and now plays for Ayr United in the Scottish Championship, wasn’t on the same page as Walker.

After six years of excellent service for Rangers, the former wide player thinks the next summer is the ideal moment for Barisic to leave the team.

“I think his time has probably come to move on,” Murphy said. Over the last many years, he has been an excellent servant.

“Won a few important games and, most obviously, the Premiership once.” He doesn’t seem to be carrying any unfavorable vibes from Rangers supporters.
