‘A great talent’: Rangers can move one step closer to £2m deal thanks to Leverkusen

It’s not surprising that Rangers are being linked with a potential £2 million move for a highly sought-after young defender from Eastern Europe, as his current club seems aware of the interest. This kind of attention is expected when a player of his caliber, who has a £2 million release clause and is nearing the end of his contract, is on the radar.

However, Rangers will face competition as other clubs like Fulham, Burnley, Wolves, and Leicester City have also sent scouts to observe Leopold Querfeld playing for Rapid Vienna this season. Even Rangers’ local rivals Celtic have shown interest in the player.

Rangers in race for Leo Querfeld

Rapid’s sporting director, Markus Katzer, anticipates significant interest from foreign clubs in Leopold Querfeld. This prediction seems accurate, especially as Oliver Glasner, the Austrian coach now at Crystal Palace, is also assessing Querfeld, along with his teammate Matthias Seidl.

The likelihood of Querfeld leaving this summer seems high, with the main questions being when and where he will move next. According to Austrian reporter Peter Linden, Querfeld has been the most consistent and top-performing defender in Rapid Vienna’s squad this season.

Linden further notes that Querfeld has a clause in his contract allowing him to leave if a foreign club offers a transfer fee of 2.5 million euros.

Gers can land £2 million bargain

Considering the aging factor of Connor Goldson and the emergence of occasional errors in the 31-year-old’s performances, Rangers might view the opportunity to sign Querfeld for £2 million as too good to pass up. Rapid Vienna appears to share a similar sentiment regarding another promising young Austrian player, an 18-year-old named Filip Milojevic. If Bayer Leverkusen decides to sell Milojevic, who captains their under-19 team, it could create an opening for Rapid Vienna to consider Querfeld’s replacement.

Markus Katzer, Rapid’s sporting director, highlights Milojevic as an intriguing defensive talent who will become a free agent in July. If Leverkusen’s decision triggers a chain reaction, it could pave the way for Rangers to target a defender capable of filling Goldson’s role at Ibrox.
