Graeme Souness: Jack Butland makes room at Ibrox for new, elite Rangers signings

Graeme Souness hopes that Jack Butland will be the perfect argument against English players who are “snooty” about joining Rangers.

The former Crystal Palace shot-stopper, who arrived at Ibrox on a free transfer last summer, has had an incredible campaign in Scotland so far and has been tipped for an England call-up.

There is a general consensus that England players are more unlikely to be called up to the international team. However, Butland could be about to disprove this theory.

Writing for Daily Mail on Saturday (2 March, page 7 of pull-out), Souness said: “I hope Jack Butland’s performances for Rangers have not escaped Gareth Southgate’s notice because I believe he warrants consideration for England.

“His quality demonstrates to any English players who might be snooty about joining Rangers just what an excellent environment it is.”

Could Rangers’ Jack Butland be due an England call-up?

It would be fair to assume that Scottish Premiership stars are often overlooked by Southgate, with James Tavernier and Connor Goldson perfect examples at Ibrox.

The former has been an incredible servant for the club since joining in 2015, making 445 appearances to date, with 121 goals to his name from right-back. That is an incredible shift from defence, albeit many of his goals come from penalties.

Graeme Souness hopes English players will take inspiration from Jack Butland at Rangers

Jack Butland is expected to provide the ideal counterargument for English players who are “snooty” about joining Rangers, according to Graeme Souness.

Arriving at Ibrox on a free transfer from Crystal Palace last summer, the former goalkeeper has had an amazing season in Scotland and is being considered for an England call-up.

Most people agree that there is a lower chance of England players being called up to the national team. Butland, though, might be ready to refute this hypothesis.

In an article published on page 7 of the pull-out of the Daily Mail on Saturday, March 2, Souness wrote: “I hope Gareth Southgate has taken notice of Jack Butland’s performances for Rangers because I think he deserves consideration for England.”

“Any English players who might be snobby about joining Rangers will see what a great environment it is thanks to his quality.”

Jack Butland of Rangers might be eligible for an England call-up.

Ibrox talents James Tavernier and Connor Goldson are prime examples of the Scottish Premiership stars that Southgate presumably overlooks.

Since joining the team in 2015, the former has made 445 appearances and scored 121 goals from right back. He has been an amazing servant for the organization. Even though he scores a lot of goals from penalties, that defense made a fantastic shift.

Graeme Souness is hoping that Jack Butland at Rangers can serve as an inspiration to English athletes.

Having made 301 appearances for the Rangers since 2018, Goldson is an amazing captain. Even at thirty-one, he’s been playing in far better form than some of the center backs that are frequently called up.
