A soggy surface forced Glasgow Rangers to postpone their last match before the international break, but Philippe Clement might benefit from the additional recuperation time.
Although the Ibrox team has maintained its strong play despite being decimated by injuries over the past few weeks, the break arrives at the ideal moment.
January signature Oscar Cortes sustained a serious injury against Kilmarnock last month that necessitated surgery. As a result, the club is likely to suffer a long-term absence.
The youthful player isn’t the only player out with an injury, though, having already scored once and provided two assists for the Gers while looking impressive in his games.
The 15-goal scorer this season, Abdallah Sima, hasn’t played since January. Meanwhile, Todd Cantwell, Nico Raskin, and Rabbi Matondo have all missed time in 2023–2024 due to minor ailments.
The amount of games the team has had to play has undoubtedly not helped, but with almost two weeks off offering much-needed rest, Clement could be able to get some of his players ready for the last few weeks of the season.
Danilo is one player who has had a lot of terrible luck this season; the new signing hasn’t played since December.
Rangers’ injury woes with Danilo
The Brazilian striker had a knee injury during a match against Hearts in December, although it didn’t appear to be as serious as initially thought.
After the match, Clement gave an update on his injury, and the club did not receive positive news. He stated:
“Danilo’s knee issue stems from a poor tackle he received during the game—an unfortunate incident that happens in football. He suffered a knee issue as a result of contact. Yes, it might be permanent because there’s a good probability he needs surgery.
In fact, the player hasn’t been seen since, and for the past few months, Clement has been forced to rely mostly on Cyriel Dessers as his center-forward option.
Danilo’s previous injury was a fractured cheekbone he sustained in a September match against St Johnstone.
The former Ajax striker put the Gers ahead against the Saints, but he was worse for wear after crashing into Liam Gordan.
He missed nine games, which halted whatever momentum he had built up in his first few weeks with the team.
Though it’s easy to say that he hasn’t had the best luck since coming to Glasgow, Danilo has shown class in the little time he’s been on the field in between the two injuries.
Danilo’s numbers with the Rangers
In order to cover the gap caused by the departure of star players Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos, Michael Beale used the summer transfer window, and he went a bit beyond.
Sam Lammers paid £3 million to join, while Cyriel Dessers cost £4.5 million. However, Danilo was the big transfer window acquisition, costing the Gers approximately £6 million from Feyenoord in the Netherlands. It appeared that the heir to Morelos had been identified.
For whatever reason, however, Beale only started the striker twice until he was fired at the beginning of October. Danilo scored three goals for the Gers under the Englishman, but the striker wasn’t given much of a chance to start in the starting lineup until Clement came.
The 24-year-old gradually became more self-assured and began to appear like a £6 million striker. The spark came from a late winner against Hearts, and he was even more impressive in the Premiership match against Dundee that followed.
With a dominant away effort, the Light Blues won the game 5-0, and Danilo was playing fantastically.
The Brazilian was impressive not just because he scored but also because he recorded nine shots overall, made four crucial passes, and succeeded in all of his dribbling efforts.
In actuality, the striker had multiple opportunities to score as he squandered an incredible four good ones, missing a chance to increase his goal total.
