Mark Guidi: Rangers star ‘Coming to an end’ of his time at Ibrox amid transfer bubble

As transfer rumors grow, Mark Guidi claims that Rangers defender Connor Goldson’s stay at Ibrox “is coming to an end.”

The 31-year-old Englishman has been linked to a possible summer move to the Saudi Pro League alongside James Tavernier after being benched by Philippe Clement during the Gers’ Scottish Cup semi-final victory over Hearts [Daily Record, 24 April].

Although Clement has stated that Goldson was simply rested on Sunday, April 21, nothing is set in stone, and Sunday Mail’s chief football writer Guidi anticipates the Gers will “upgrade” their backline this summer.

In an interview with The Go Radio Football Show on April 24, at 9:10, he stated: “To be really honest, I believe Connor Goldson has been with the Rangers for about four years? I believe he has received a lot of praise, if not more, and with good reason, but it was the right move to remove him from the team.

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I believe his time is running out. Rangers’ core defense needs to be improved; it is currently insufficient. Their current partnership isn’t working, and I would include John Souttar in it.

In the summer transfer window, will Connor Goldson be sold by Rangers and Philippe Clement?

Over the past few weeks at Ibrox, Goldson has received a lot of criticism from both fans and commentators for his ineffective performances, which have coincided with the Gers’ decline in Premiership performance.

It’s no secret that at Hampden Park, Clement’s side appeared much more formidable when Leon Balogun and Souttar were partnered together, and it doesn’t appear likely that Goldson will be able to push his way back in against St Mirren.

As they prepare for another title challenge the following season, the Light Blues are anticipated to make investments this summer. However, unless players also turn away, no additions will be made, and the defender appears to be among them.

For the most part, Goldson’s performances during his time in Glasgow are deserving of high praise, as Guidi pointed out. But it seems like his time at Ibrox is up, so it might be best for everyone if he moves on.

In other Rangers news, Jack Butland is anticipated to attract a lot of transfer interest prior to a possible “mega money” move.
