‘It Ends’ QPR man to leave as a free agent at the end of next month

QPR defender Aaron Drewe will be leaving the club when his contract expires at the end of next month, as confirmed on their official club website.

QPR will release the full-back in late June, making him a free agent. He will have to weigh his options over the next few months as he looks for a new home for next term.

Drewe, 23, has spent his entire career with the Championship side, rising through their academy ranks.

According to his statement on the R’s website, he is currently experiencing strong emotions. When you’ve been at the same club for most of your life, you develop attachments and relationships with the people and the club, and it becomes a part of you. But I also believe it is the right time for my career to progress.”

Drewe joined QPR at the age of nine and has been with the club for 14 years. He represented the London club at various youth levels as a teenager.

When non-league club Chelmsford City approached him on loan for the first time, he was given the go-ahead to leave.

Later, the Londoner took on temporary positions at Oxford City and Weymouth to gain more experience.

Drewe made his senior debut for QPR in January 2022 in an FA Cup match against Rotherham United, which they won on penalties.

He made 13 first-team appearances for the Hoops, two of which were in the league last season under Marti Cifuentes.

However, the Red Sox have made the difficult decision not to extend his contract in a deal that will most likely benefit all parties involved.

His chances of earning a regular spot in their starting XI are slim, and leaving will allow him to start over somewhere else.

What’s next for QPR?

Drewe’s departure will free up space and funds in QPR’s squad to bring in reinforcements.

They have yet to release their retained list as they prepare for next season.

Following their break, the R’s will be in a confident mood heading into pre-season, hoping to carry their momentum from staying up into next year.

Cifuentes is a highly regarded manager who has restored the club’s sense of optimism as he seeks to instill more of his own personality in the upcoming transfer window.
