Blackburn Rovers failed to sign QPR defender Jimmy Dunne.

The London club revealed on Tuesday that the popular 26-year-old will remain at Loftus Road this summer. Dunne’s contract was set to expire at the conclusion of the season, but the player has become an important cog in Marti Cifuentes’ Championship survival machine.

The former Burnley player made 29 league appearances this season and was inspired when he was shifted to right-back in the final months. When asked about his extension, he stated, “I am very happy to be staying at QPR.” Everyone knows how much I adore this club and everything it stands for.

“This has been a tough season, a real roller-coaster, and I am looking forward to the break but am also excited about the future.”

The contract extension comes despite reports that Blackburn Rovers are interested in bringing Dunne to Ewood Park on a free transfer this summer. In January, Football Insider reported that Rovers were interested in signing Dunne to replace James Hill.

However, Dunne will return to QPR for a fourth season as the club looks to progress in the 2024/25 season. The former Manchester United youth product joined the club from Burnley in 2021 for an undisclosed fee.

Dunne’s volley against Birmingham City secured a crucial three points for QPR and earned him the Goal of the Season accolade. QPR CEO Christian Nourry commented on the contract extension, saying: “It is an absolute pleasure to announce that the ‘Jimmy Dunne, QPR’ narrative continues.

“Jimmy has proved in the last six months that he has the courage and capacity to throw himself into the unknown and succeed in his new role as a right-back.

“With an infectious enthusiasm, huge heart and relentless pursuit of excellence on and off the training pitch, Jimmy is a credit to this club.”
